Abstract Taste plays a crucial rule in the final step of host plant selection by the female Spodoptera littoralis as do all phytophagous insects. Host plant selection involves searching, landing, contact evaluation, and finally rejection or acceptance of the plant for oviposition (Schoonhoven et al., 2005). The steps that characterise each stage of the process are thought to be mediated by special cues that differ with respect to the range of their influence. Typically, metabolites on the surfaces of leaves are perceived by contact chemoreceptors on the tarsi, ovipositor, mouthparts, or antennae of insects (Anderson and Hallberg, 1990; Qiu et al., 1998; Chapman, 2003; Jorgenson et al., 2007a; Newland and Yates, 2008; Popescu et al., 2008; Galas et al., 2009). |
