Abstract

Phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) is a key enzyme in the
SYnthesis of phenolic compounds in plants. This investigation
aims to study its structure, characterization and effect of light and
treatment with inhibitors on its activity. The inhibitors chosen
were DCMU, streptomycine (STM) and chloramphenicol (CAP). Two
plants were selected for the investigation; faba bean (Viciafaba
L.) and maize (Zea mays L.). The seeds were germinated in petri-
dishes and then transferred to pure sand. Light treatment started
with the 4-day-old seedling stage and continued throughout the
whole experimental period. Other seeds were soaked in STM or
CAP for two days then grown in sand and irrigated with water
under the normal light/dark cycle. For DCMU, the seeds were
irrigated with the inhibitor solution starting from the fourth day till the end of experiment (14th day.
