Abstract

Aquaculture systems has recently been used for waste-water treatment and recycling. They are employed in secondary and or tertiary waste-water br>treatment to reduce nutrient loads in both marine and fresh water systems. br>In the current study, the fresh water macrophytes Spirodeia polyrrhiza;
Elodea canadensis, Ceratophyllum demersum and Potamogenton pectinatus,
the macro algae Enteromorpha prolifera, Codium tomentosum and the
phytoplankton Chiorella pyrenoidosa have been experimented to estimate
their performance on culture media containing sewage effluent with
concentration levels of 20, 40 & 60%. Media with 80% sewage effluent
were also experimented in cultures of Chiorella pyrenoidosa. The optimum
sewage concentration level at which the inorganic nutrient ( nitrogen and phosphorus compounds ) beside the organic nitrogen and BOD levels became at minimum was determined. The plant biomass and protein content of the experimented plant were also estimated and the results are summarized in the following.
