Abstract

During the reproductive years, up to 80-90% of menstruating women will experience symptoms [breast pain, bloating, acne constipation] that forewarn them of impending menstruation, so-called premenstrual molimina. Available data suggest that as many as 30%- 40% of these women are sufficiently bothered by molimina to seek relief. The
term PMS should be reserved for a more severe constellation of symptoms mostly psychiatric, that lead to periodic interference with day-to-day activities and interpersonal relationships. Women with this degree of symptoms probably comprise 3-5% of women in their reproductive years Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a ubiquitous cultural reference and a significant subject of biomedical research. It is composed of a heterogeneous physical and psychological symptom in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. These symptoms are of sufficient severity to disrupt the lives of affected women and appear with consistent and predictable relationship to the menses. It causes substantial morbidity with obvious detriment to interpersonal relationships, social interactions, lifestyle, work performance, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life, as well as considerable economic burden to the society. Most of ladies may not know that they have a problem and encounter it as normal physiological menstrual symptoms. Thus family physicians play a major role in this problem. They are the first line where the problem is present.
