Abstract

Children must master language and speech which are essential for sharing feelings, ideas, and information with others to communicate effectively. Most young children acquire these communication skills effortlessly, but some experience difficulties in learning to understand and use the language. These children have speech or language disorders, which may put them at high risk for associated learning, social, and behavioral problems.
The aim of this study was to identify children with communication disorders in nursery schools at Dakahlia governrate through two research questions, the first one: is there a communication disorders among children in nursery schools at Dakahlia governrate? and the second one: what are the types of communication disorders among those children?. The study was conducted in 12 nursery schools at Dakhlia governrate representing four localities namely Mansoura (East, West, Center), Aga, Belqas, and Mit Salsil, one from governmental and other from private nursery schools were selected randomely from each locality. The selected sample was 852 children and their care givers and 12 teachers one from each nursery who deal and teach for those children. There were no exclusion criteria for study sample as all children aged from 3 to <6 years old, both boys and girls from different socioeconomic classes and Egyptian Arabic-speakers were included. The tools were developed by the researcher that involved structured questionnaires for primary care givers and teachers to identify children` communication disorders and their practice regarding these disorders. Also awareness assessment questionnaires for both care givers and teachers were used. Study results showed The identified children with communication disorders through care givers` response revealed that were 19.7% had delayed language development (DLD) without apparent cause, 7% had DLD due to ADHD, 2.8% had DLD due to ASD, and 1.3% had DLD due to hearing impairment with a total of 30.8% out of the studied sample had delayed language development and 2.8% had learning disability. results were tabulated and discussed in this thesis. The study recommended A national screening of pre-school children for communication disorders.
