Abstract Schizophrenic patients typically have problems relating to others and demonstrate global deficits in social skillsThe psychiatric nurse has acrucial role in identifying interpersonal skills and deficits in schizophrenic patientsTherefore , this study was conducted to assess interpersonal competence and ways of coping among schizophrenic patientsA descriptive correlational design was utilized in this studysample of convenience of 100 schizophrenic patients were recruited from the Out - patient Clinics of El - Abbassia Mental Health Hospital in CairoSocio -demographic / medical data sheet , Interpersonal Competence Questionnaire (ICQ) , Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ) , Emotional Support from Others Scale , and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) were used to achieve the purpose of this studyA semi structured interview was used to collect the data from the patientsFindings of this study indicate that , the majority of the studied sample were not able to initiate or maintain interpersonal relationships with othersTo conclude schizophrenic patients need emotional and social support from others to maintain their stability and interpersonal competenceSocial skills training should be introduced as a useful way to help patients to develop and promote their interpersonal competence. |
