Abstract

The present study was focused on studying and evaluation of the radioactive concentration levels due to natural and artificial radionuclides
and trace element concentration levels in the industrial Helwan region environment and to see the trend in variation of these values around the
factories and to the map of radioactivity levels in the surrounding environment. This map will be used as reference information to assess any change in radioactivity background levels due to various geological processes or any influences on the radiation environment.
Soil, plant, bottom sediment and some waste samples are collected from different locations of Helwan City. The collected samples were analyzed for detemlination the activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs by using gamma ray spectrometry (HPGe detector). The trace element concentrations of AI, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in selected soil and waste samples was determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS).
