Abstract

apter I: A literature survey was presented generally on antibiotics and specially on cefotaxime sodium (CTX) and cefixime (CF), concemmg their chemical properties uses and and determination. literature survey on 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-
nzoqumone (DDQ), 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), 3,6-dichloro-2,5- .
Jydroxy-p-benzoquinone (p-CLA) and iodine (12) reagents were given. An idea about
: use of these n - acceptors as selective analytical reagent and simple definition of sh perfomlance liquid chromatography (HPLC) III drug analysis, was gIven III tails ..
) Chapter II: Includes the experimental part, the materials, solutions, equipments ed and working procedures were given.
Chapter III: Simple, rapid and reliable spectrophotometric method for the lennination of CTX and CF drugs and HPLC method for the determination of CF ~g were adopted. Spectrophotometrically via CT complex formation of CTX drug Ih DDQ, TCNQ, p-CLA and 12 reagents and CF with TCNQ and 12 reagents. The ’eet of different parameters was studied.
eresults obtained were divided into two parts
(a) The first part
Involved spectrophotometric determination of CTX drug vIa charge transfer nplex fonnation with DDQ, TCNQ, p-CLA and 12 reagents and CF drug via charge asfer complex formation with TCNQ and 12 reagents.
• The absorption spectrum of DDQ with CTX drug in acetonitrile solvent shows maximum at A = 450 nm (e = 5.06xl03L.mor’ cm-I). A solution of drugs and TCNQ in acetonitrile solvent has a characteristic long-wavelength absorption bands, frequently with twq maxima at A = 740 nm (eCTX = 3.86xl03 L morl em-I and eCF= 103 L morl em-I) and 842 nm (eCTX = 7.44xl03 L.mor1 em-I and eCF= 2.3 x 103 L morl em-I) in the electronic spectrum. The peak at A = 842 nm was selected for CT complex studies because ”it gives the highest absorption intensity as indicated from the e values, and the reagent showed a relatively weaker absorbance at this wavelength. The absorption spectra of p-CLA with CTX in acetonitrile exhibits an absorption maximum at A = 510 nm (e = 2.7xl03 L.morl cm-I). This finding may be explained in terms of the formation of a charge-transfer.
