Abstract

The aim of our study was to estimate the level of IGF-1 and leptin in newborns with small for gestational age and detect the relationship between these factors and early postnatal growth. Our study included two groups of SGA neonates:Group Ia:(17 full term) and Group Ib:(13 preterm). The studied groups were subjected to history taking, clinical examination and laboratory investigations including serum IGF-1&serum Leptin by ELISA.
Another thirty AGA neonates were taken for comparison with SGA as regard to serum IGF-1 and serum leptin. And then after 2 weeks of follow up,the studied group of SGA neonates reclassified again into:Group IIa(15 full term) and Group IIb:(10 preterm). They were subjected to clinical examination and laboratory investigations including serum IGF-1&serum Leptin by ELISA.
As regard the results of the current study,we found that highly significant higher level of IGF-1 and leptin present in AGA than SGA neonates. Also statistical significant higher mean levels of serum IGF-1 and leptin in fullterm than preterm at birth and after 2 weeks of follow up.
Moreover, there were significant positive correlations between mean serum IGF-1 and leptin level with weight, HC, length and BMI at birth in SGA supporting the idea that fetal IGF-1and leptin levels are the primary hormones involved in the regulation of fetal growth and so defiecieny of them lead to low birth weight neonates.
Furtherly, there was positive significant correlation between mean serum IGF-1 level and weight, HC, length and BMI after 2 weeks of follow up and this supporting the idea that IGF-1 can be used in treatment of SGA neonates.
Finally, there was significant positive correlations between mean serum IGF-1 and serum leptin at birth in SGA and this was support that leptin’s association with fetal growth may be mediated by the IGF system, and specifically by IGF-I.
