Abstract

The orbscan enables determination of the posterior surface of the cornea for the first time. This has created a new means of establishing corneal power, solving the above problems by evaluating the posterior surface of the cornea. Furthermore, the accuracy of axial length measurement in the mainly long and very long ayes of refractive patients can be improved by optical biometry with the new IOL Master, which is capable of measuring the exact optical distance to the fovea.
However, cataract surgeons need a number of devices foe corneal analysis and axial length measurement to be sure of obtaining the best result for the patient.
The patient should be informed that the available methods of IOL power calculation are not accurate and they may need correction for the residual hyperopia which may occur after cataract extraction. More studies on a large number of patients are needed hoping to find a method to prevent hyperopic shift which occur in these patients.
