Abstract

Nudear logging is ,Ul import.U1tlogging tedlllique done hy many oil service comp’Ulies. They arc m;ijorly interested in par.unelers like fonnaLion porosity, hulk density, and nalural radiaLion. The oUler services that Ulese compallies provide li’om using nuclear logging lools of high complexity arc [onnaLion liulO!ogy/miner.uogy, etc. Some of lhese par,uneters C,UI he measured by using neulron logging tools ,Uld some C,UI only he measured by using a ganuna ray lool.
In this thesis, Ule system parameters including geometry, materi,us ,Uld nucle,u’ sources, etc., are invesLigaled ,Uld Ule lr.UlsporlaLion ,UlU inleracLions of neutrons in thc regions of interest arc simulated according lo de t.l.i bl nuclear physics Uleory awl 111eir nnclcar cross-sec Lion data.
To understand Ule response of nuclear logging tools, Ule neutron transporl/dilli.lsion Uleory and photon dillusion Uleory arc needed. Unfortunalely, in most cases Ulere arc no ,uI,uyLical solutions if complex tool geometry ,Uld detailed energy dcpcndcnce are involved. Monte Carlo nUlTleric;u models have been used hy nucle;u’ scienLisl~ in UIC well logging industry lo address a majOI-ity of ch,ulCllgcs. The models have heen widely employed in Uu:: optimization of nude,LT loggillg tool desig11, ,Uld thc development of inleqlretaLion l11eUlOds for nude,u’ logs. However, Ule lull succes,~ of ulis simulaLioll proccss is delennined hy a reliable benchm’LTk. where Ule completc ,ulll precise gelleric neutron logging tool geometry is necess,u-y. The deposiled ellergies of p,LTLidcs cnterillg Ule He-3 neutron detector ,u”e recordcd and t.illied ’Uld Ule lool responses to such a scenario are generaled. Thermal neutroll producLion, which is onc of the key Ileutroll porosily logging per/immUlce paI<unelers, was evaluated.
