Abstract Asthma prevalence are increasing worldwide causing many socioeconomic troubles which leads to the development of many questionnaires worldwide to measure the Validity and reliability of asthma prevalence. The first widely used questionnaire in respiratory epidemiology was the questionnaire from the Medical Research Council (MRC) of Great Britain. In the first version, from 1960, there were only a few questions about wheezing, but in later editions, more questions about asthma and asthma like symptoms were added. The MRC questionnaire initiated the development of other questionnaires such as the European Community for Coal and Steel (ECSC) questionnaire of respiratory symptoms and the questionnaire from the American Thoracic Society and the Division of Lung Diseases (ATS-DLD-78). This study was done among 508 individuals randomly selected among the population lives in Cairo. They were classified into five age groups 15-25, 25-35 , 35-45 , 45-55 and 55-65. The majority of the volunteers were among males due to refusal of many females to participate on knowing of the written consent, the male volunteers were 400 while the female volunteers were 108. The majority of the volunteers were among the youth age groups 15-25 and 25-35, they were keen when they were informed that this might be of benefit to the community. The finding in this study reveals: The prevalence of smokers was 48.4%, the majority of the smokers were among the age group 15-25 years while the minority was among the elderly 55-65 years, The prevalence of smoking among males were 59.5% while the prevalence of smoking among females were only 7.4%. |
