Abstract

Effective treatment of peri and post operative pain represents an important component of postoperative recovery as it serves to blunt autonomic, somatic and endocrine reflexes with a resultant potential decrease in perioperative morbidity. It has become common practice to employ a poly pharmacological approach to the treatment of postoperative pain, because no agent has yet been identified that specifically inhibits nociception without associated side effects.Recently, the importance of magnesium in anaesthetic practice has been highlighted. It has bet:n suggested that magnesium (Mg) has got the potential to treat and prevent pain by acting as an antagonist of N-methyl d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors . Recent studies suggested a role for NMDA receptor antagonists (such as magnesium or ketamine) in the management of postoperative pain, as NMDA receptor antagonism inhibits induction and maintenance of central sensitization after nociceptive stimuli.
