Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of two types of surface treatment on the bond strength of two ceramic materials Materials and methods: A total of forty disc shaped samples were constructed to obtain 20 twin samples; samples were divided into two equal groups according to the type of ceramic material; Group I: Leucite reinforced feldspathic ceramic material (IPS Empress). Group II: Lithium disilicate ceramic material (IPS Empress II). Each ceramic group was further subdivided into two equal subgroups according to surface treatment used into; Subgroup A: etched with 9% Hydrofluoric acid gel. Subgroup B: Sandblasting with Al2O3 (100μ) followed by 9% Hydrofluoric acid etching. Silane coupling agent (Monobond plus) was applied to all samples. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was employed before cementation of twin samples to assess the surface topography created by each surface treatment.Adhesive resin cement (Variolink II) was applied to the treated surfaces to cement each twin samples together from each surface treatment groups using a special cementing device constructed for this study. Shear bond strength test was performed using universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm /min. All data were collected; tabulated and statistically analyzed Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was employed to examine the fractured samples and determine the mode of failure for each ceramic group.
