Abstract The remarkable weakness of the first grade primary pupils of the experimental language schools in some English reading skills due to the lack of acquiring phonemic awareness skills was the focus of the present study. The synthetic phonics teaching method was implemented for developing the reading skills of the first grade primary pupils of the experimental language schools. The subjects of the study were 80 boys and girls, aged 6-7 years old and enrolled in two primary one classes to whom a pre¬post test was administered to the two classes. Forty pupils in one class (the experimental group) were taught to read with the synthetic phonics method while in the second class, the other 40 pupils received regular instruction of reading. To assess the two groups progress the pre-post test was administrated, once again, to the two classes. Analysis of the obtained data revealed that the suggested teaching method had a large effect size on developing each of those reading skills for the first grade primary pupils of the experimental language schools. Thus, the results showed that using the synthetic phonics method is important for early exposure to reading and is highly recommended for developing the reading skills. |
