Abstract

Fouling in utility service of water system in heat exchangers reduces the he:at transfer capability of the heat exchanger and causes e:tjuipmcnt overheating. I kat exchangers are routinely cleaned mechanically or chcmic’dly. Cleaning is nut oldy increasing the maintenance costs of a power plant but also it reduces thc scrvice lill: ur a heat exchanger. Thus the use of Scale Inhibitor Addition, S.LA, for trcating cuolillg water to reduce the fouling rate in heat exchangers is a good method lor applications in ~he industt-ial field. This study, in its first part, repurts an cxperimcntal investigatiun in ”KIM A” company to show the effect of Scale Inhibitor Additiun, S.l./\, Ul} the louling. A fourth i’nter-cooIer or a synthesis gas reciprocating six stages compressor is uscd as it
test rig (Field measuremenls work). The results with Seale (nhibilur Addition case, arc comparcc1’ with that without Scale Inhibitor Addition. Artesian wakr ur ASWLlIl city is L1sed as a coolant in ”KIM A” cooling water circulation. During this experimcnt is held tbe coolant passing through thc annulus of the [ourll! illter-colller, while the synlhises gas passes inside the inner tube. The overall heat transkr codliciellt was calculated during the operating time and conse:quently the fouling resistitl1ce was Lklcrlllincd. Ihe results of thc Cicld mcaSUll’ments work illdicatc that a signilicLlllt reductioll (Jr /”Llulillg rate is obtained by tile use or S.l.A, thus an incretlse ill the service: lik or thc cookr is achieved. The second part or Ihis study reports a laboratory investigation wurk for two case:s, Llsing spce:ial test rig in \vhich the lest section is a double tube condenser. A special boiler is used to provide the condenser with steam as a source or heal. The steam passes inside tile tube whilc the cooling water passes t11rough the annulus.
