Abstract

QUALITY of life is a patient centered approach
* QUALITY of life is a fashionable concept in the field of out come measurement and has been enthusiastically adopted by clinicians, researchers, economists and managers. It is not a new concept, but one which has become increasingly important for a number of reasons.
* Technological advances in medicine have increased the possibilities for influencing quality of life for good or ill, but have also introduced states of health which were previously unknown, such as prolonged coma. They have resulted in high-cost treatments which can only be provided on a limited basis and for which some criteria for allocation are required. These advances have been paralleled by changes inlay and professional attitudes to health and illness with there-emergence of the patient as the important focus of medical care, and by changes in NHS management which are encouraging clinicians and hospitals to prove’ the effectiveness and quality of their care
* Measuring quality of life for patients has been the focus of clinical practice and research in recent decades and is of importance in assessing treatment outcomes
* There is an increasing prevalence of chronic diseases like Bronchial Asthma, Diabetes Mellitus, hypertension, osteoarthritis and cancer, these diseases affecting quality of life.
* There are many valid tools for the measurement of QOL which are developed in many languages and validated and translated to many other languages and also validated and used effectively
