Abstract

Glibenclamide holds good promise for administration via transdermal route for the treatment of diabetes with added advantages of circumventing the hepatic first pass metabolism and avoidance of oral side effects. The various physicochemical parameters that were evaluated help to understand the usefulness and suitability of Glibenclamide to be administered via transdermal films and microemulsion systems.
Stability of microemulsion systems and its ability to solubilize water insoluble drugs such as Glibenclamideand Flurbiprofen, explained the sustained release profiles obtained, which further improve the absorption and bioavailability of these drugs.
The invivostudy demonstrated significant hypoglycemic activity of Glibenclamide film and microemulsionpreparations. Considering the study results; polymer based films and microemulsion loaded with Glibenclamide can emerge out as an efficient drug delivery system for the treatment of Diabetes.
