Abstract

This study aimed to demonstrate the effect of omega-3 fatty acids
supplements on serum IL-1 and TNF-α concentrations in JIA patients,
clinical manifestations, laboratory investigations and on daily
requirements of NSAID.
Fifty five participants were included in this study; they were divided into
two groups:
Group 1:
Thirty five Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis patients were included for this
study, diagnosed according to ACR classification from the Rheumatology
and Rehabilitation outpatient clinic, and Abu-El Rish Children hospital,
Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University Hospitals. Only 24 patients
continued the study (took omega-3 for 12 weeks), the rest of patients
were excluded from the study due to irregular attendance.
Group2:
Twenty healthy volunteers serving as control group.
All patients included in this study were subjected to full history
taking, clinical examination, laboratory investigations .All JIA patients
took dietary supplements of omega-3 fatty acids in the form of capsules
(500mg/capsule), 4 capsules/day in two divided doses for 12 weeks, each
capsule contains 500 mg omega-3 Fatty acids (300 EPA, 200 DHA)
There is statistically significant decrease in serum IL-1 and TNF-α
after dietary supplement of omega-3 fatty acids in JIA patients and also
significant difference in comparing with control group.
There is significant improvement in DAS-28, VAS, CHAQ and
laboratory investigation. There is decrease in the doses of NSAID along
the course of treatment.
