Summary and conclusion
Diabetic nephropathy is a major cause of morbidity in diabetic patients

and it is a leading cause of end-stage renal disease. Its incidence is
increasing worldwide.
There is an increasing demand by patients to use a natural product with
anti-diabetic activity, because insulin and oral hypoglycaemic drugs possess
undesirable side effects .

In this study therapeutic action of curcumin on (STZ)-induced diabetic
nephropathy in rats in comparison to Pioglitazone (as an example for oral
hypoglycemic drug) was studied.
We expected that curcumin might have a therapeutic effect on
Streptozotocin-induced diabetic nephropathy in rats similar to that of
pioglitazone.
Results of the study showed that groups treated with only curcumin
showed no improvement in any parameter except for anti-oxidants, which
were affected significantly with curcumin.
