Abstract

This study aimed at evaluating onlay block bone grafting versus
particulate bone. Those two techniques were used for augmenting bony
defects of the maxillary region of partially edentulous individuals using
autogenous bone harvested from the mandible. Twelve patients with
partial edentulous area in the anterior maxilla were treated in this study,
the resorption of bone in this area didn’t allow for dental implants
placement and required the need for enhancing the ridge height and
width as a preparatory step.
All patients were scheduled for ridge augmentation procedures
using two different techniques. The grafts were harvested from the
mandibular symphesis and ascending ramus and patients were divided
into two groups the first group was treated with the bone in onlay block
form while the second group was treated with the bone in the
particulate form packed in a titanium cage. The bone blocks and the
titanium meshes were rigidly fixed to the native bone by titanium
microscrews.
Radiographic assessment was carried on preoperatively,
immediately and six months postoperatively. Assessment included
measurements of linear changes in graft width and density of the grafted
bone using reformatted cross-sectional CT images using the dentascan
software.
