Abstract

Post-operative oedema is a common observation seen by patients
and oral surgeons. Factors affecting post-operative oedema were
surveyed. The present study compared the effect of handpiece speed on
post-operative oedema after surgical removal of impacted mandibular
third molar. The present study compared the effect of low speed
handpiece 30000 rpm versus high-speed handpiece 120000 rpm, mounted
on electric micro motor, on post-operative oedema.
The study was conducted on 30 healthy patients, who have bilateral
mesioangular mandibular third molar class Ι position B. The study group
included 22 males and 8 females .The age was ranging from 18 to 30
years with mean of 24.4 years. During surgical procedure under local
anesthesia, bone is removed by low speed handpiece on one side and high
speed handpiece on the other side so patients themselves act as control
group of the study.
Oedema was measured by two methods: first were tape
measurements of four lines of predetermined anatomical landmarks.
These lines cover most area of facial oedema. The second method was the
use of caliper in the lingual embrasure between lower first and second
mandibular molar, while the other arm of the caliper was adjusted lightly
the skin of the cheek. The distance between the tips of the caliper arms
measured using graduated tape.
Trismus was measured by measuring the distance from incisal edge
of maxillary right central incisor to the incisal edge of mandibular right
central incisor by using Boly gauge.
