Abstract

Aim: The current study aimed at mapping the biomedical research production from
the Eastern Mediterranean region in years 2000, 2005 and 2007
Methodology: It is a quantitative bibliometric study of the biomedical publications
from the Eastern Mediterranean Region based on the PubMed and IMEMR databases
in the assigned years of the study.
Results: In the assigned years of the study, the total number of biomedical
publications from the region was 23433 publications. The most publishing countries
were: Iran, Egypt, and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Clinical specialties and public
health were the leading areas of research in the region.
Conclusion: The biomedical research production from the Eastern Mediterranean
Region have increased, however, still unsatisfactory. The low biomedical research
output from the region compared to the developed countries reflects the economic,
social and political situations in the region
Recommendations: Goal-oriented and need-based programmes should be organized
at the national and institutional level. where, the needs should be defined, justified
and approached by local scientists who are research-oriented and capable of
establishing proper dialogue with policy makers and funding bodies.
Keywords: Biomedical publications, research production, Eastern Mediterranean
Region.
