Abstract

The present study is planned to investigate the effect of immobilization-stress for different periods (5, 15 and 30 days) on the histological, ultrastructural, histochemical and immunohistochemical studies of the stomach of rats and the possible curative role of diazepam. The stress caused increased cortisol hormone levels of stressed-rats and many histopathological alterations in the gastric mucosa (by LM): surface mucous cells, parietal (oxyntic) and chief (peptic). The increment of collagen fibres in stomach was also seen. Ultrastructural studies (by TEM) confirmed the histological alterations in these gastric mucosal cells. Also, stress resulted in the decrease of the two main chemical
(polysaccharides) and total protein contents}. The immunohistochemical studies of the cytoskeletal intermediate filaments after stress revealed a marked intense cytokeratin and vimentin immunoreactivity in rat stomach. Treatment of the stressed-rats with diazepam showed obvious improvements and amelioration of the histological, ultrastructural, histochemical and immunohistochemical alterations induced in the stomach. F or reason, stress must be avoided, and the present findings support the possible curative role of diazepam.
