Abstract

The present study is devoted for focusing on the main structural elements of the onshore part of the Morgan transfer zone which separates between the central and southern Gulf of Suez. The thesis aims to identify the different types of lithology and clarify the stratigraphic setting and construct a detailed geologic map of the selected area. It is also provided by descriptive and kinematic modeling of the structures. The thesis emphasizes on the occurrence and role of pre-existing structures in the development of this transfer zone. Structurally, the study area comprises three rift blocks: the Gebel Gharamul rift block, the northern part of Esh El Mellaha rift block and the Gebel El Zeit rift block. Gebel Gharamul rift block includes nine tilted fault blocks namely: Gebel East Gharamul tilted fault block, Gebel West Gharamul tilted fault block, Gebel Edam tilted fault block, Gebel El Helal tilted fault block, Gebel Monsil tilted fault block, Gebel Lamalif tilted fault block, Gebel Sufr El Dara tilted fault block and Gebel Abu Shaar El Bahari tilted fault block and Dara Dorsal tilted fault block. Detailed geologic maps were constructed for all the areas mentioned above Structural analysis of the study area showed that the inherited structures in the study area include WNW, NW, ENE and N-S striking faults as well as folds and extend from the southern part of Gebel East Gharamul tilted fault block to the northernmost part of Esh El Mellaha rift block. The occurrence of these inherited structures affected greatly the rift architecture in the study area. The concentration of these structures in the central part of the study area represents a major heterogeneity in the substratum of the rift. This resulted into the formation of a transfer zone separating between two rift domains in the northern and southern parts of the area (Morgan Transfer Zone).
