Abstract

Child abuse is the physical, sexual, emotional mistreatment, or neglect of children. In the United States, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define child maltreatment as any act or series of acts of commission or omission by a parent or other caregiver that results in harm, potential for harm, or threat of harm to a child.
Most child abuse occurs in a child’s home, with a smaller amount occurring in the organizations, schools or communities the child interacts with. There are four major categories of child abuse: neglect, physical abuse, psychological/emotional abuse, and child sexual abuse.
This study included 1096 case of children they were 566 male 51.6%) and 530 female (48.4%), their ages ranged between 12 and 16 year). They were 477 (43.5) from urban areas and 619 (56.5) from rural areas.
All enrolled children were subjected to questionnaire items which include the following:
• personal data as age; sex;……
• sociodemographic data as parent age ; job and education; parental income and social environment………
• data about child abuse before the age of 15 years which include parts of current abuse; type of abuse and effect of abuse.
• physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect.
• school marks of midterm and final of the year were collected.
The study revealed that:
• physical abuse was the most prevalent type of abuse in as it emotional
abuse (42.4 %) while sexual abuse is the lowest as, 12.6 % of children were sexually abused.
• child abuse was correlated to some sociodemographic and living conditions as, child age, gender, father education and work and parent marital status ,and mother work, area of residence, and family income.
• Physical abuse and sexual abuse were associated with poor educational performance.
• Physically abused students show negative self-esteem, subjected to increased anxiousness, having nightmares, and sleep little.
Finally, it is obvious that child abuse is a significant public health problem among the study population we wish to increase awareness of child abuse and its negative feedbacks trying to make Egypt devoid from child abuse.
