Abstract

SLPI was assayed by ELISA in tracheal aspirate from 30 children with acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome .They were recruited from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Ain Shams University Children’s Hospital in Cairo.

SLPI levels in tracheal aspirate of patients(median=2100 pg/ml; mean±SD= 2845±1967.5 pg/ml) were significantly higher than the controls(Median=1255 pg/ml; Mean±SD= 1270±200.1 pg/ml) ( p< 0.01) and SLPI levels in tracheal aspirate of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (Median=2700 pg/ml; Mean±SD=3497.5±2128.4 pg/ml) were significantly higher than the corresponding values of patients with acute lung injury (Median=1600 pg/ml; Mean±SD= 1540±268.5 pg/ml) ( p< 0.01).
By comparing values of SLPI in tracheal aspirate of survivors and non-survivors, its levels were significantly higher in the later group ( p< 0.01).
Our results suggest that SLPI might play a role in the diagnosis and grading of acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome in children and also in the prognosis of these syndromes.
