Abstract

The Quaternary sequence exposed along the shoreline of western Libya comprises the Pleistocene Jifarah and Gargaresh formations; overlain by Holocene soils and sand dunes. The pre-Quaternary substrate is represented by Cenomanian dolostone (the Sidi As Sid Formation, Ain Tobi Dolostone Member) and/or Middle Miocene limestone (the Al Khums Formation).
The Jifarah Formation begins with shallow marine facies, moderately to well cemented massive sandy limestones and sandy coglomerates; followed by well developed cyclic repetition of nodular and platy calcretes.
The Gargaresh Formation starts with marine cross-bedded bioclastic sandstone to sandy limestone, locally with abundant disarticulated marine bivalves. The shallow marine facies is separated from the overlying paleosol by a well defined erosional surface.
Both the Pleistocene Jifarah and Gargaresh formations in most of the examined coastal exposures are overlain by Holocene soils and dunal sand.
Pleistocene aeolianites represent the main building stone used in the Roman and Byzantine monuments of Sabratah. Most of the investigated monuments have suffered severe and very severe damage, which reveals the overall need and urgency for preservation measures. The long-term environmental monitoring of the archaeological sites of Sabratah in association with further detailed investigation may prove important in establishing suitable conservation plans to minimize the decay.
