Abstract

Two field experiments were carried out at South valley Farm Research Station, Toshka Region, Agriculture Research Center during 2006 and 2007 seasons, this study aimed to investigate the effect of organic and inorganic fertilizers on the growth, yield and yield components of maize, c.v. (S.c.129) under drip irrigation system. The experiments were laid-out in split-split plot design with three replications. The main plots were assigned to organic matter fertilizer treatments (without organic matter and 20 m3 organic matter/fed.). The sub-plots were allocated with nitrogen levels treatments (zero, 45, 90, 135 and 180 kg N/fed.) and PK fertilizer combinations (zero P and zero K, zero P + 24 kg K2O/fed., 30 kg P2O5/fed.+ zero K and 30 kg P2O5/fed. + 24 kg K2O/fed.) were distributed in sub-sub plots. The most important results obtained from this investigation can be summarized as follows: A) Growth characters: 1- Number of green leaves/plant not affected significantly by organic matter fertilizer and PK fertilizers. On the other hand number of leaves significantly increased by increasing nitrogen levels up to 180 kg/fed., all types of interaction had insignificant effect on this trait in the tow seasons. 2- Applying 20 m3 organic fertilizer recorded the highest value of leaf area/plant. Increasing N levels up to 180 kg/fed. increased the same trait in both seasons. PK fertilizer did not get any significant effect on leaf area. The interaction between 20 m3 organic fertilizer and 180 kg N/fed. gave the highest value in both seasons.
