Abstract

The objective of pre-natai care is to assure that very wanted pregnancy culminates in the delivery of a heaithy baby without impairing the health of the mother (Cunningham et a!., 1989).
Ante-natal care which had its beginnings in 1901 when Ballantyne pubiished his piea for a Pro-maternity hospitai is now throughly established as a branch of therapeutics and preventive medicine through the world (Browne and Dixon, 1939).
At the beginning of the 20th century maternal mortality rate in Britain was 4-81 per 1000 and perinata). mortality rate was 63 per 1000. But with the development of ante-natal care, the maternal mortaiity declined to 355 deaths occuring in association with 2,298,198 deliveries in 1972 and pen-natal mortality rate declined to 18 per 1000 in 1975 (Browne and Dixon, 1978).
Estimates of the magnitude of maternal mortality in Egypt vary widely according to region and source of data. A population-based estimate for Souhag city in upper Egypt in 1984—85 was 471 maternal deaths per 100,000 liv.e births, compared with a national esLimate for au Egypt based on vital statistIcs of only 78 per 100,000 births in 1979. The national estimates are believed to be too low due to under-reporting of maternal mortality as a cause of death in vital statistIcs (El— Kady et a!., 1985).
