Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the possible antitumor effect and antioxidant role of balanitoside extracted from Balanites aegyptiaca fruit against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) bearing Swiss albino mice. The extracted balanitoside was proved by chemical analysis e.g. T.L.C., mass spectroscopy, IR, NMR techniques and cyclic voltametery. The balanitoside was injected i.p. to determine the LD50 which found to be a safe compound (until a dose of 1000 mg/ kg) then mice were injected i.p. by different doses (dose response curve) with balanitoside after EAC inoculation to determine the most effective dose ,which found to be 10mg balanitoside /kg mice, mice were then injected i.p. with this dose before and after EAC inoculation to achieve therapeutic and preventive dose for 9 days consequetive, the effects of balanitoside on the count of EAC cells and life span prolongation were studied, lipid peroxidation, nitric oxide levels and catalase, caspase 3 enzyme activities were estimated, also cytological studies on EAC cells and histopathological studies on liver cells were done, Treatment with balanitoside decreased the EAC cell count by 61.17% and 62.76% for therapeutic and preventive groups respectively. Also therapeutic dose elongate life span (T/C) index by 13.63% and preventive dose by 36.72%, it also decreases malondialdehyde level by 48.28% in liver and 55.12% in serum of preventive group compared to positive control group and lowered the malondialdehyde level by 44.70% in liver and 60.15% in serum of |
