Abstract

Postpartum blues is a common psychological problem experienced by women soon after giving birth. Women with “baby blues” often report feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and irritable. Biochemical, psychological, social, and culture factors have been explored as possible causes of post partum blues; however, there remains a dearth of research into ensuring what are the certain causes or risk factors for developing postpartum blues.
A prospective cohort study is done; the aim of the study was to assess the predisposing factors for postpartum blues among primigravida women.
This study was conducted at antenatal Clinic and inpatient postpartum unit of Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital. The subjects of the present study included 158 women at the previously mentioned settings, and selected under the following inclusion criteria: Primigravida at the last month of pregnancy (36 -40 weeks of gestation), different age, normal and abnormal pregnancy period, normal & abnormal labor, different educational level and occupation.
There were two types of tools for data collection were used for achieving the aim of this study: Structured Interviewing questionnaire designed by researcher and divided into three parts to assess the socio demographic characteristics, mother history, life styles and present history related to pregnancy of the study sample. As well as postnatal depression scale (Edinburgh June, 2009): modified by the researcher to detect post partum blues symptoms during 1st two weeks of postpartum period. It consisted of 10 short statement regarding common postpartum blues symptoms with four replies matched to the statement each statement is scored on a scale of (0-3).
The Pilot study was carried out for 16 cases represented 10% of the sample to test the reliability and applicability of the data collection plan and ensure the clarity of questions, no major modification were found after pilot study.
The findings of the present study reached to the following conclusion:
 More than one quarter of the studied sample developed postpartum blues throughout the study.
 All almost studied groups were suffering from minor physical problems and psychological stressors during pregnancy.
 The present study revealed a number of risk factors are believed to contribute and correlate to the developing of postpartum blues among primigravida, these risk factors included women work, women age, pregnancy physical and psychological problems, pregnancy stressors, certain life style actions, in addition to lack of social support during pregnancy.
In the light of the study findings, the following were recommended:
 Adapt program strategies during pregnancy on stress management and life style modification for mothers and their supportive personals.
 Early detection of predisposing factors that may put the woman o risk for developing postpartum blues.
 Educational programs and messages through net, brochures and magazines should provide more information based on scientific knowledge about psychological aspects during perinatal period to increase awareness of both mothers and their families.
 Further studies still needed to identify the effect of psychological problems during perinatal period on maternal- child health.
