Abstract Pruritus was defined more than 340 years ago as an unpleasant sensation associated with the immediate desire to scratch. This definition does not cover all the aspects of this subjective symptom) but does provide a simple and accurate description of itch. A unique feature of itch is that it is restricted to skin and occasionally the mucos~ such as, the conjunctiv mouth, nose, pharynx, and anogenital area.Current evidence clearly indicates existence of an interactive network between the skin and the peripheral as well as the CNS to regulate and respond to pruritic stimuli. It became evident that specified sensory nerves and their receptors are crucially invol”1edin the pathophysiology of pruritus. Thus, pruritus is not merely a sub modality of pain, but an individual sensation of our sensory nervous system. |
