Abstract

Lactational amenorrhea is the normal absence of menstruation after child birth and during the process of breastfeeding of the baby.
Variation in the duration of lactational amenorrhea is attributed to the secretion of prolaction hormone from the posterior pituitary gland which is believed to play a post role in inhibiting the effects of other hormones involved in ovulation.
After delivery the prolactin level is verty high but in the absence of breastfeeding seum prolaction declines rapidly to pre-pregnancy level within one week.
However if breastfeeding is initiated ealy the prolaction hormone is maintained at high levls fo longer periods.
