Abstract

The thesis at hand represents a discourse analysis of argument structure roles and relations of prominence in select Edward Said’s works. The analysis of argument structure roles leads us to an identification of the relations of prominence in the text of Said’s works. This analysis is best conducted using Lexical Mapping Theory, a theory used to relate argument structure roles to grammatical and discourse functions in order to identify the prominence of the roles. The relations of prominence are then analyzed in context to see the influence of such prominent relations on an understanding of the discourse enacted through the text of Said’s works. This is a discourse analysis conducted through the use of discourse deixis and conjunctions. Discourse deixis is a type of deixis used to relate some sentence to the discourse that contains that sentence. This is done by relating the sentence to the surrounding co-text and the external context, such as the reference to the discourse participants and their knowledge status. Furthermore, conjunctions help to connect sentences with their immediate context. This discourse analysis helps us to identify what the addresser’s intention in writing the text is, what he expects from the addressee, and what he wants the reader to believe or do.
