Abstract

The morphological structure of a cranial nerve (Ill—Ill), as it energes from the central nervous system resembles initially, that of a fibre bundle within the brain with abundant neurological supporting elements: oligodendrocytes, astrocytes, microg].ia. This proximal neuroglia]. portion of the cranial nerve root ends however with the penetration of the nerve through the pia matter. Upon penetiating the pia matter, the neuroglia is abandoned and the nerve root acquires it’s reticulin and Schwann cell componeats. Prom that point onward, Schwann. cells sheathe the axons to their terminations.
The distance from the cerebra]. axis to the level at which the nerve penetrates the pia mather
(= neuroglial portion) is up to 10 mm. inthe eighth cramial nerve (Tarlov, 1937).
In the eighth nerve the location of the neuroglial — neurolemniaJ. junction is in most instances within the poru.s acousticus0 Occasionally it is located more distal, closer to the fundus of the internal acoustic mealus. At times it may be located more proximal, medial to the prous acousticus, and therefore outside the teuporal bone. This neuroglial — neurblemmal connection displays a somewhat irregular, sicicel — shaped, centrally concave configuration. Islands of glial tissue are aften encountered beyond the function, in the digtal portion of the nerve as far peripherally as Soarpa’s ganglion (Hensohen, l955).
