Abstract

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To identify the presence of any intrauterine pathology in cases of missed abortion as a cause, an association or a result, by using diagnostic hysteroscopy in examination of the uterine cavity.
DESIGN: A prospective, observational, cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, at Benha University Hospital.
STUDY DURATION: from March 2011 to May 2012.
PATIENTS: Every patient was subjected to:
• Complete history taking with special attention on the personal history (to know any degree of consanguinity), the obstetric history (to know the gestational age and the type of abortion), and the past history (to exclude general causes of abortion).
• Complete general examination.
• Complete abdominal examination.
• Complete pelvic examination including; PV, bimanual examination and speculum examination.

Pre-operative investigations for diagnostic hysteroscopy were done for every patient. They included:
• Quantitative serum Beta subunit human chorionic gonadotropin (B-HCG).
• Fasting and 2 hour postprandial blood glucose.
• Complete blood picture (C.B.C) and complete urine analysis.
• Serum creatinine, SGPT and SGOT.
• Electrocardiogram (E.C.G).
METHODS: Diagnostic hysteroscopy was done for all patients.
RESULTS: The diagnosis of the study group (50 patients) was 37 patients with normal uterus and 13 patients with uterine abnormalities; as 3 with arcuate uterus, 3 with incomplete uterine septum, 2 with intrauterine adhesions (IUAs) and 5 with submucous uterine polyp.
The difference between the normal and pathological uterus of the patients according to the age, gestational age, parity, number of previous abortions and methods of evacuation was non-significant except, the age was higher in patients with normal uterus.
CONCLUSIONS: Post-abortion-hysteroscopy is a simple and useful method for an early diagnosis and surgical treatment of these intrauterine findings.
