Abstract

The aim of this work was to define the role of arthroscopy in the diagnosis of patellofemoral pain syndrome in young adults. Thirty patients with the typical syndrome of patellofemoral pain were subjected to clinical examination, radiography, laboratory investigations and arthroscopy. An upper limit of 35 years and a lower limit of 13 years of age were chosen. The youngest patient was 16 years and the oldest was 34 years with an average of 23 years, 18 patients were females and 12 were males with a female to male ratio of 3:2. The mean duration of symptoms was 16.36 months. Eight cases were bilateral, 12 cases with right patellofemoral pain and the remaining 10 patients had left patellofemoral pain. Patients were selected thus excluding those with history of trauma to their knees, arthritis, peripatellar causes of anterior knee pain, unstable knees including patellar dislocations and those with symptoms suggestive of subluxated patellae, positive meniscus tests abnormal hips and abnormal laboratory findings. The quadriceps angle was measured clinically and was considered increased when it was 150 or more in males and or more in females.
