Abstract

Summary and Conclusion
Snoring is a common problem with many sociomedical manifestations.
Cigarette smoking, male gender, age greater than 40 years, obesity, respiratory symptoms, cough or sputum production and wheeze and the use of alcohol or medication were associated with and increased prevalence of snoring.
Five factors, singly or in combination, contribute to snoring; incomplete tone of palatal, lingual and pharyngeal muscles, space occupying masses impinging on the airway, excessive length of the soft palate and uvula, restriction of airflow in the nose, and the anatomic basis for alterations in pharyngeal collapsibility.
Diagnosis of snoring can be made through history taking, physical examination, and special examinations including sleep nasendoscopy and acoustic rhinometry for localization of the site of upper airway narrowing.
The non-surgical treatment includes weight loss, avoidance of alcohol, hypnotics and antihistaminic. The antidepressant may be beneficial. Devices as (CPAP) may be the choice of treatment.
The surgical treatment includes UPPP (by excising redundant soft tissues involving the uvula, soft palate, tonsils, posterior and lateral pharyngeal walls. A more recent procedures include punctuate diathermy of the soft palate using laser to stiffen the palate, laser assisted uvulopalatoplasty. Other recent procedures Radiofrequency tissue ablation and Injection snoreplasty and this is the aim of our work to evaluate result of these new procedures.
The present study included forty patients complaining of snoring. All patients were adults between 18 and 55 years old presented to the department of E. N. T outpatient clinic in the Benha University hospital.
All patients were subjected to preoperative assessment protocol that included:
(A) Thorough history taking.
(B) General examination.
(C) Full ENT examination.
(D) Investigation.
The patients were divided into three separate groups, twenty-five patients each:
Group A, UPPP was performed by radiofrequency.
Group B, UPPP was performed by Injection snoreplasty.
In our work, the RAUP technique achieved successful treatment of snoring in 75% of patients, on the other side the injection technique achieved the same favorable results in 65% of patients.
In This study, we concluded that RAUP is a safe and effective procedure but the degree and duration of pain is greater than that with the injection procedure with better results in the improvement of snoring than in the injection procedure.
