Abstract

The strict definition of recurrent disc herniation is the presence of herniated disc material at the same level, ipsi- or contralateral, in a patient who has experienced a pain-free interval of at least 6 months following a discectomy surgery.
Fourty cases of recurrent lumbar disc with surgically corrected causes were included in this study
from the results of this study concerning the recurrent lumbar disc, the following could be concluded:
• It was common in males due to higher physical stress and activity.
• The most common symptom was sciatica denoting root irritation. The most affected signs were, sensory hyposthesia and straight leg raising denoting root pathology.
• The time interval for recurrence of sciatica after the initial operation correlated well with outcome. Patients whose symptoms recurred later (after one year) seemed to have better outcomes.
