Abstract

Emergency psychiatry has become a subspecialty of general psychiatry requiring specific skills to deal with situations for which immediate therapeutic intervention frequently is necessary. The widening scope of emergency psychiatry goes beyond general psychiatric practice to include such specialized problems as the abuse of substances, children, and spouses and the violence of suicide, homicide, and rape and such social issues as homelessness, aging, competence, and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).Emergency psychiatrist must be up-to-date on medicolegal issues and managed care. (Sadock&Sadock; 2004)
This work targeted to make use of the Egyptian studies done on psychiatric emergencies, in order to identify the gaps in the Egyptian researches and to overcome these defects in the future. So that work aimed at ystematically reviewing & appraising the available Egyptian studies on psychiatric emergencies.
In this study several databases were explored in the whole period of the study to collect the available studies on all types of psychiatric emergencies in Egypt. The databases explored are those of libraries of faculty of medicine Ain Shams University, faculty of medicine Cairo University (Kasr EL-Aini), faculty of medicine Al-Azhar University, as well as the Egyptian Journal of Psychiatry, and other available journals, all databases were searched till the time of data collection.
Of total (37) studies collected, the majority were concerning the suicidal attempts (10 studies), followed by studies concerning self destructive behavior (6 studies), then studies concerning aggression (5 studies), violence (5 studies), anxiety and neurotic disorders (5 studies), Homicide (4 studies) and finally suicide (2 studies).
On appraising the included studies, we tried to criticize every study in objective points such as title, aim of the work, the sampling methods and the assessment tools used in every study. Also, the results and discussion were criticized. Lastly, the recommendations and the limitations of studies are stated or not.
Summery of M.Sc. and M.D. thesis of Ain Shams University, Cairo University, Al-Azhar University and the Egyptian Journal of psychiatry will be represented in the Appendix.
 Conclusion:
Although the great effort and time spent in the Egyptian research it was noticed that it lacks coordination to offer complementary data about the profiles of different psychiatric emergencies. Further efforts are needed to collect the available researches to construct the a national data base that will help in planning for the future researches according to the needs of the community, and subject that are not covered by Egyptian researchers such as sexual emergencies, refusal of nutrition and hydration and reaction to disasters must be covered in order to over come the gaps in the aspired national Egyptian reseach data base.
