Abstract Fishes of family Sparidae are the most dominant group of demersal fish in the coastal waters off Alexandria. Many species of this family are of significant I’ commercial value. Due to their economical importance, they made the subject of various studies which were carried out by various authors. In Egyptian Mediterranean waters, Dowidar (1974) studied the fish eggs and larvae of various fish species. Pagellus erythrinus was among the species studied in 1bis investigation. Kamel (1978) studied the taxonomy and hermaphrodidsm of fishes of family sparidae in the Egyp1ian Mediterranean waters. Hassan (1990), made a comparative biological study on species of family spariae namely, Boops hoops and Sarpa salpa in Egyp1ian Meditemmean water. Ezut et al, (1991), published a paper on the sex reversal in Boops hoops. RhbDa (1992) made a comprehensive study on the fishery biology of sea breams (Genus PageDus) in the Egyp1ian Meditemmean waters. Variaus studies from several other authors in the Mediterranean coun1ries have been pubJished dealing with their feeding and breeding Thus, Vildalis (1950) studied the biology of Boops hoops in Greek ~ and in (1951) he studied the biology of the same species in Monaco. I..arrancta (1953) published a paper on the sexuality of page11us erythrinus. Later in (1964) this same audtor studied the biology oftbat species o:ffthe coasts ofCasteBon (Spain). Zei and Zupanovic (1961) made a study on the sexual cycle and sex reversal in Pagellus erythrinus. Rijavec and Zupanovic (1965) studied the biology of Pagellus erythrinus in the middle Adriatic. Lipskaya (19()6) in the Gulf of Guinia studied the feeding and reproduction of Boops hoops. ei~ and Weiss (1973) in ArgenDDian waters published a paper on the Larvae of Pagrus IJ«grUS. Manooch (1977) studied the food of Pagrus pagrus from north and south Carolina (U.S.A). Manooch and Hassler (1978) studied the biology of Pagrus pagrus. Gilardin (1981) in the Gulf of lion (France) studied the reproduction of Pagellus erythrinus and Boops hoops. GhoIbel and Kfari (1982) studied the reproduction of PageDus erythrinus in Tunisian water. Rosecchi (1983) studied the feeding. |
