Abstract

An investigation on the performance in a diesel engine receiving part of its fuel as an aspirated vapour has been investigated experimentally.
These experiments were done by admitting the secondary fuel into the suction manifold to be mixed with air. This mixture is admitted into the cylinder in a lean form. The effect of various proportions on the performance is also studied to be compared with the engine performance when running with liquid fuel only. ( without using the gaseous fuel i.e. secondary fuel ).
The variation of the quantity of the secondary fuel has been investigated to find out the optimum quantity of gaseous fuel that gives the best performance.
These experimental investigations have been done with the variation of engine speed ; these speeds are 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500 rev/min
The effect of the gaseous fuel has been examined in terms of the power output, the brake thermal efficiency, the exhaust smoke level and exhaust gas temperature.
The analysis of the test result conclude that there is an improvement in engine performance, these improvements are :-
1-Increasing the engine brake power.
2-2-Increasing the breake thermal efficiency as an effect of the gaseous fuel on the combustion.
3-هImproving the combustion process inside the cylinder that the smoke level on exhaust gases was dereased.
4-Decreasing the exhaust gas temperature, for the same reason as in (3).
The general conclusion that can be drawn from this project is that there is an improvement in the engine performance due to the use of the gaseous fuel as a secondary fuel as it has a great effect on the chemical reaction of the primary fuel.
