Abstract A mylin is a naturally occurring hormone that consists of 37 amino acids and is co-secreted with insulin from pancreatic β cells in response to entral nutrient intake (Reda et al., 2002). The present study aimed to measure the level of amylin peptide in a cohort of IDMs and following its level at day five of life This study was conducted on 20 full term newborn IDMs (10 males and 10 females) and 15 healthy full term control newborns (7 males and 8 females) who were recruited from the neonatal intensive care unit of Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Ain Shams University over a period of 6 months. Umbilical cord blood samples were collected immediately after birth and at day five of life to asses amylin level. Statistical analysis of the data were done. The results of the present study revealed that birth weight was significantly higher in IDMs group in comparison to control group; especially females whom weight were higher than males. The level of cord plasma amylin in our IDM group was significantly higher when compared to the cord amylin level in the control group, while its level at 5th day of life was lower compared to cord blood in IDM group, but was still higher compared to cord blood in control group, with no correlation with gestational age, birth weight or gender. This study showed that there is positive correlation between cord amylin level and maternal HbA1c, which represent long term regulation of blood glucose. On the other hand, there was no correlation between birth weights of infant of diabetic mothers with maternal HbA1c. This study showed positive correlation between cord amylin and gestational age in healthy neonates. |
