Abstract

The present thesis was undertaken to study the soluble polysaccharide (Ulvan) of two species of the green seaweed Ulva (Ulva lactuca and Ulva fasciata) collected from the northern Egyptian coasts.
The major research activities and outcomes of this study can be summarized as following:
*The chemical composition of the investigated Ulva spp.
The main component of either Ulva lactuca or Ulva fasciata is the carbohydrate fraction which occupies about 56 % on dry weight basis, followed by protein which represents about 25 % of the dry weight. Lipid content was about 1% and ash content ranged from about 12 to 17 %.
*The extraction procedure used resulted in polysaccharide yield about15- 17 % on algal dry weight basis.
*Using the High-Performance Liquid Chromtography (HPLC), monosaccharide composing the following sugars, glucose, rhamnose, galactose, arabinose and xylose.
* FT-IR characterization of the extracted polysaccharide from the Ulva lactuca and Ulva fasciata showed peaks appeared around 1049-1216 cm-1, 774-847 cm-1, 1420-1431 cm-1, 3446-3448 cm-1, 2941 cm-1 and 1651-1653 cm-1 respectively.
* The Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the extracted sulfated polysaccharide from green algae Ulva lactuca and Ulva fasciata are thermally stable until about 169 and 245oc respectively.
* The viscosity profiles indicate that increasing the concentration of polysaccharide solutions lead to an increase in viscosity.
