Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to study effects of speed, entry pressure , entry position and attitude angle on the performance characteristics of hydrodynamically journal journal bearings.
The journal bearing test rig has been constructed to be able to record the performance characteristics. The test rig consists of horizontal journal shaft from steel and the journal from ph. Bronze (diameter of journal is (50 mm) driven through a belt by an electric motor connected to it a controlling speed unit . On which shaft a floating ph.bronze bush (diameter 55mm) , we take both journal and bearing from ph. Bronze to have same amount of wear in both of them. On the bearingisfixed 16 taping pressure, 12 along the bearing and 4 on its width connected to 16 glass tubles fixed on abroad to read the pressure head.
The main results of the experiments showed a great agreement with the theoretical equations, that when increasing the speed the max. pressure along the bearing increase . Changing the oil inlet position in direction of journal rotation increases the pressure head till reaches a max. value when the oil inlet takes a location about 1800 from the load vector where the max. oil pressure starts to decrease again , so that the oil inlet position should be located within the divergent bearing clearance zone near the load vector for proper bearing performance. Also , we get that the max . pressure along the width of the bearing occurs at the middle and decreases at the ends because of leakage at both ends, and changing the oil inlet position affects the attitude angle by increasing it whenever the oil inlet located in the convergent clearance zone.
The major importance of this work enables the designers of bearings especially for rolling mills to select the position of inlet of oils or water . Additioally , segments location could be selected to achieve higher performance.
