Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common cancer worldwide in males, eighth commonest cancer in females and the third most common cause of cancer mortality. HCC accounts for about 90% of all primary liver cancers and it is unique in that it develops in the background of well-recognized risk factors that are responsible for marked variation of tumor prevalence and clinical presentation.
The fact that HCC incidence is not equally distributed throughout the world reflects the heterogenous geographical distribution of the relevant environmental risk factors.
In this study we studied the prevalence of HCC and among hepatic patients admitted to Damietta governorate hospitals as compared to Ain Shams university Hospital from January 2010 to January 2012.
It was found that the prevalence of HCC among hepatic patients in Damietta is nearly twice that in ASUH.
Also it was found that hepatitis C infection is the major risk of HCC and hepatitis B comes after, but HBV infection is higher in Damietta than ASUH studied HCC patients.
It was noted that old age, male sex and diabetes are significant risk factors for HCC.
Options of treatment are limited because most HCC patients are diagnosed late (BCLC D)
Finally, surveillance for HCC is important in high risk persons and should be done at least every 3-4 months using ultrasound and AFP.
