Abstract

I’
Although the use of honey for treatment was known to many old
nations very long ago before the appearance of the Islam, the Holy
Qur’an (At about 600 AC) was the fIrst book that mentioned the curative
nature of bee products collectively, and not only honey, in SURA XVI,
AL NAHL; VERSES 68 and 69 that say: ”And your God inspired to
bees that to have homes from (in) mountains, trees and from what they
(people) build then eat from all fruits and find with skill the spacious
paths of its God. Comes out from within their interiors a drink of
varying colours, wherein is healingfor mankind. Verily in this is a Sign,
for those who give thought 1/.
In our Arabic and Islamic world, the believe in the curative activity
of the substances produced by bee is still almost restricted to honey,
while the rest of bee products such as propolis, royal jelly, bee bread,
wax and their curative actions are still unknown to the majority of
people.
1.1. Historical background
Man used honey as a treatment of illnesses for ages, it might have
been before the science of medicine itself. The ancient Egyptians,
Greeks and Romans, Indians, Chinese and Russians employed honey for
wounds and diseases of the gut. It is probable that man knew the
benefits of honey and chose it for this purpose while looking for natural
materials to cure himself.
