Abstract 29 Thermal energy storage plays an important role in energy conservation of many systems utilizing thermal energy derived from solar collectors, off-peak excess thermal energy of power plants and wasts heat from power plants or process industries. In this thesis, the main characteristics of a latent heat thermal storage system, using wax as a storage material , were experimentally determined during charging process. An experimental set-up was designed and constructed in order to conduct the experiments. The phase change during heating is measured at 16 different locations inlet hot water temperatures ranging from 750c. Melting time for X and Y planes is given at different storage tank inlet conditions. The propagation of the melting front inside the storage tank is measured at different times for different inlet water temperatures; this enables the calculation of the melting volume, and consequently the sensible liquid. Sensible solid, and phase change accumulated heat storage. |
