Abstract

This study was designed to determine the leukogram, platelets count, serum
biochemical, pathological and immunological changes in rabbits experimentally infected with locally isolated strain of Clostridium perfringens type A. The efficacy of Cl. perfringens toxoid and or allicin in preventing or minimizing the
severity of infection with Cl. perfringens strain was evaluated. One hundred rabbits of 6 weeks old were used in the present experiment. They were divided into five groups. The first group was kept as non-vaccinated and non-infected normal control. The second group was infected with Cl. perfringens type A strain. The third group was vaccinated with Cl. perfringens toxoid at 6 weeks old
then with a booster dose at 9 weeks old. The fourth group was treated with allicin 20% added to the ration (200 gm / ton ration) during the period from 6 weeks of age till the end of the experiment. The fifth group was vaccinated with Cl. perfringens toxoid at 6 weeks old then with a booster dose at 9 weeks old, and
treated with allicin 20% from 6 weeks of age till the end of the experiment. All groups except the normal control one were infected orally with 5 ml and
subcutaneously with 2 ml of 24 hrs cooked meat broth containing 1x107/CFU of Cl. perfringens type A strain at 10 weeks of age. We concluded that
clinicopathological, histopathological and immunological investigations adopted
in this study are helpful for the diagnosis of clostridia infection as well as for the evaluation of vaccine efficiency in rabbits. Moreover, vaccination with clostridia
toxoid alone gives protection against clostridia infection, while combined vaccine with allicin gives better results.
